Institutions 

Institutions are the formal organizations and agencies in the community, including private businesses, public schools, libraries, parks, police and fire stations, and nonprofit organizations such as hospitals and social service agencies (Kretzmann and McKnight 1993).

The CHIS maintains inventories of selected institutions in the 57-county area that can be examined numerically and geographically. These inventories are periodically expanded and updated.  Institutions contained in the CHIS at the present time are:
