Purpose: The purpose of the North Pasadena Community Outreach Center is to curb gang violence among elementary, middle school and soon high school students by giving them a safe place whereby they can work on homework, enjoy tutoring, art activities and life skills training.
Background: St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was established in 1943. It is a growing parish serving Pasadena, TX. St. Peter’s is one of the parishes of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas profoundly dedicated to its outreach programs. Over the years, it has sustained a pantry for the feeding of hungry people, conducted English as a second language classes, a G.E.D. program in partnerships with Harris County, purchased and supported Senior Citizens Housing, and conducted an afterschool program for the children of Gardens Elementary School. All these projects have been accomplished with no federal funds, and with the support of many local organizations and churches, such as St. John the Divine in Houston. The Community Youth Center is the first step of a community collaborative effort aimed at curbing youth gang activity. It will provide a place for positive alternatives for these students, a place where they could finish homework, receive tutoring, play games, participate in cultural arts activities, and learn new skills. At a time in a child’s life when belonging to a group is critical, the Center will be a “place to hang,” a place where these are fun things to do as well as positive role models.
Mission: To minister to the spiritual, health, education needs of the community.
