Angela's Story and The Beacon

Angela is a 50-year-old woman who came to Houston for a fresh start. She previously lived in California . She is a high school graduate and has some college.

Ms. Cason came to Houston in the spring of 2010. At first she stayed with friends, but that situation became "not so good." She chose to go to Bread of Life's After Dark program. There she met a Beacon client who encouraged her to seek case management services.

We first met Angela in July of 2010. She came in and was given referrals to get a Gold Card, a voucher to go to Operation ID, and directions to several affordable apartments and single room occupancy units. Angela was also asked to come to the budgeting class, taught here at the Beacon.

Within one and one half months Angela received a Texas ID, a Gold Card and was approved for a unit at New Hope Housing /Brays Crossing. Angela then completed her budgeting class and received her certificate.

Angela has been in her own home since August 2010. She continues meeting with her Beacon volunteer case manager on a monthly basis, sometimes involving a home visit.   Angela keeps a clean house and is timely in paying her rent.

When asked about using her as a "success story" Angela was very happy to be included and told us that she hopes we are able to help others to get a place of their own and be independent.

The mission of The Beacon is to provide services that restore dignity, self-respect and hope to Houston's poor and homeless.
